Before the Activity:
I am going to go to the Bakuva organization again. The first time I went, I ended up enjoying it very much. You are completely aware at all times that the children you are taking care of there are not normal children, to call it some way. Most of them have parents in jail and live in a place were drugs and violence are very abundant. It is obviously not the easiest and best way to grow. I want to give more time of myself to these children. Last time I was nervous of going there but at the end it all turned great and I had a very good time with them. I hope this time it all goes as great.
During the Activity:
This afternoon was amazing. Most of the children I met last time were very happy to see me again! They were all jumping around and calling my name, telling me to play with them. This time I nobody asked me to help them with their homework (I hope it was because they had already finished it) but we played games during the afternoon. Moreover, I even did a bit of a mix of activities today. Two of my classmates who came with me and I taught some of the children there how to play chess! We played several games and throughout that time their skills REALLY improved. Both of my classmates were also from the Chess club (in fact one of them, my brother, is the head of the club) and it was pretty interesting to see how we can actually teach someone else how to play chess well, when at the start of this year we had no idea whatsoever, about what good chess plays were.
After the Activity:
Overall, this service experience at Bakuva has helped me to realize that most things we take for granted when we grow up in our childhood (and when we're not so young too) are very important and we should value them more. Parents who take care of you and having a good house and a good live to live, with all of the comforts we want, is very exclusive and certainly the abundant majority of people in our city do not live this way. This experience has taught me how to treat children too. Now I am aware, I'm too introvert when it comes to take care of little kids but I think I am getting used to it now and I am enjoying it too. I am aware I am good and taking care of children; helping them with their homework is something which I like very much. However, it is completely true I don't know how to take care of them in a more close and emotional level. I am probably too cold with these children and it is something I want to change in the future. Bakuva has surely been a great experience and in the future during my life, I will look forward to try out similar experiences.
During this activity I have accomplished the following objectives:
1. Increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas of growth.
2. Undertaken new challenges (taking care of children is something completely new to me. Taking care of children in risk of social exclusion and helping them with their homework and trying to make them have a good time was an even bigger challenge for myself.)
7. Considered the ethical implications of their actions (As a volunteer of Bakuva I had to behave in a very polite and correct way at all times. This is because us volunteers were seen as an example by the children there. This was something very important I had to have in my mind at all times.)
8. Developed new skills (I am introvert when talking to little children and taking care of them. This is why it is so difficult to me to carry out activities such as this one. Being able now to teach them mathematics or play chess with them for example is a degree of closeness I had never reached when taking care of children and I am proud of it.)
