As mentioned in my Reflections -Playing the Harmonica post this is something completely new for me but I am nevertheless very interested in this instrument. I feel intrigued to find up to which level am I able to reach playing this instrument.
During the Activity:
I am watching a series of videos from a YouTube channel in which they teach you the basics of the harmonica step by step. I have realized that it certainly is not as easy as it seems. People believe you just put this instrument near your mouth and blow, this is not the case at all. I have found out that there are special ways to play this instrument which causes new notes to be played, notes the harmonica was not meant to play when created. Nevertheless, this technique is for more experienced harmonica players and I am not going to practice doing it until later. This is something I did not expect and it increases even more my wish to master this instrument. Everything is going nice and smooth.
After the Activity:
After watching several, meaning a lot of videos from YouTube about the basics on this instrument I am improving at a good rhythm and I am already able to play some short songs. I met my personal goal and I have learned a lot. I wanted to learn the basics of this instrument and I have, I feel confident playing and I am prepared for a further learning of the harmonica. Maybe I should look at other sources of information such as articles or other instead of only videos, maybe it would help as well. If I were to do it again, I would have taken more time as I have rushed to do the fancy basic stuff with the harmonica instead of taking more time to learn the more basic stuff such as how to hold it, how to play it quickly and to control your breathing. I have met some learning outcomes so far:
- I have increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas of growth referring to my harmonica performance.
- I have undertaken new challenges by trying something completely new for me (the harmonica).
- I have also developed new skills when playing this instrument and hope to develop them even more in the future.
